Moon (2009)

Very nicely put together Brit flick.. avoids many of the cheesy (groans) clichés you often see in sci-fi films to deliver the goods.

The Sam Rockwell show in space is not as 2D as one would imagine; this delivers and gives the viewer plenty to ponder. Does not have the same element of wonder as other cerebral sci-fi fodder (2001.... , Solaris etc), but firmly remains ''thinking man's'' science fiction.

The Damned United (2009)

I wouldn't say it is the best film about football ever made, but it is in the top one .. and the sequel will even better ;-)

Hard to imagine you could make a Cloughie film with barely a whisper of Forest, but they've done it (deliberately) chronicling his ill-fated tenure at Leeds Utd. (Dirty, dirty Leeds).

Martyrs (2008)

After thoroughly enjoying Switchblade Romance I had high hopes for this French "shocker" but this sadly lacked the same va va voom.

Duplicity (2009)

Mitch : Underwhelming and location-glossy Owen/Roberts vehicle which does seem to drag a bit. A few nice twists and turns did hold my interest, though the outcome felt empty and the path well-trodden. Felt a bit duped from this 2 hours runtime; average at best.

Janck : Surprisingly enjoyable (although maybe to be expected from the guy behind Michael Clayton), smart and fun.. worth checking out.

The Invention of Lying (2009)

More edgy and subversive than I was expecting, but just feel Gervais is more suited to the small screen.

Observe and Report (2009)

Very average and seemed long despite the sub 90 minutes runtime.

One dimensional characters make for a bland comedy. Give this a miss.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

Technically very good, but slow and lacking in excitement. The Serie A of movies.

Janck 3 stars (Jun '09)

At two and three quarter hours, this does drag on a bit. The highs and lows are never powerful enough to really justify the head scratching 13 Oscar nominations (though it did win 3). A long film based on a short story - nice, but not brilliant.

Shifty (2008)

Nicely put together Brit flick.. decent is the word and I wanted to give it four stars but I've given everything four recently so it gets..

Very good Brit-flick crime drama, with down-to-earth dialogue and a tight script. It's decent bruv.
