Legend of the Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole (2010)

Some of the best CGI in animation you'll be likely to see, this fantasy tale has a certain charm and a touch of 'Lord of the Rings' to it.

Thor (2011)

All the boom and bombast you'd expect from a Branagh comic book superhero.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World vs. me.

Fresh, funny, fantastical. But also tangibly annoying and knowing at times, and bound to polarise viewer opinion. Typecast niceguy-geek Michael Cera plays this role perfectly; who cares about the one trick pony? There was enough horseplay here to keep me entertained.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

Enjoyable enough CGI fest, but not a patch on the charming original if truth be told. Ralph Fiennes is the highlight as Hades in this style over substance fantasy epic.

Heartless (2009)

The devil is in the detail as Jim Sturgess enters into a deal with demons in East London.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Mindbending imagination adventure, which is actually better than it sounds. Has it's own fantasy charm in what proved to be Heath Ledger's last on screen adventure. Trippy.

The Lovely Bones (2009)

Good visual imagery, but surprisingly little emotion to leave any lasting impression. Standout performance from Stanley Tucci, but doesn't rescue this from averageness.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

More Jabberwocky than Cheshire Cat smile.

Delivers in the colourful and quirky way you would expect, that this is almost the 'norm' for a Tim Burton effort. Is a visual treat to behold though.

9 (2009)

Wonderfully dark post-apocalyptic rag-doll dystopia animation. Tim Burton is on hand to produce, but full credit goes to writer/director Shane Acker whose Oscar nominated short secured funding for this full length feature. Does not pack the emotive punch of DisneyPixar, nor is it as polished, but the set pieces entertain throughout.

Wolverine (2009)

Thank God they still make entertaining no brainer action movies. Nothing Oscar-worthy here, the peripheral characters (of which there are many, and well...peripheral...) predictably fall away alongside the brooding and franchise-milking cash-cow Hugh Jackman. Luke warm attempt at a back-story, but vastly superior to the atrocious X Men 3.

Avatar (2009)

JANCK : Largely pedestrian, lets hope 3D doesn't replace a decent plot, acting and script hey?

Franklyn (2009)

A rather strange blend of dystopian future and modern day London in which narratives intertwine. You could see the intention here, although the end result is an understandable, yet over-complicted plot. Watchable.

Big Fish (2003)

Weird ... check. Helena Bonham Carter ... check. Wonderful ... check. Helena Bonham Carter again ... check. Danny Elfman music ... check. It can only mean one thing, a Tim Burton film, although sadly not one of his best.

Hellboy (2004)

A movie I first watched upon it's release a few years ago, getting a very "meh" review from me back then. However, upon watching a second time I found much to enjoy in this comic book adaptation ... a touch of humour, plenty of energy and a blade welding Nazi. Great fun and one hell of a movie.

It's a darker Men in Black, with less CGI and and a smaller budget. It does work though; bring on the sequel.
